The hopes of the watching world had been pinned on Spain to bring to an end five days of underwhelming contests, and while they did just that it didn't quite happen in the way many predicted.
Despite dominating large periods of the game, and even hitting the crossbar through Xabi Alonso's thunderous 25-yard effort, the European champions crashed to defeat courtesy of Gelson Fernandes' 52nd-minute strike.
