Horror tackle: De Jong launches into Ben Arfa

Marseille plan to sue Nigel de Jong for his leg-breaking challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa.

Ben Arfa, who faces months out after a double fracture, is on loan at Newcastle for the season from the French club.

Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier said their lawyers were already working on the case.

'We will clearly bring charges against the player,' he said. 'You need to rid the European football pitches of this kind of player.'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger waded into the debate by applauding Bert van Marwijk's decision to drop the Manchester City midfielder from Holland's squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Wenger said: 'I salute the gesture of the Netherlands, who did not pick De Jong after this horrible tackle. What is incredible is that the players are not punished afterwards.

'These things have happened too many times this season for it to be a coincidence.'
Speaking on French television, Wenger claimed the authorities were not serious about banishing such challenges, adding: 'We have to fight against the violence.'
