Ronald Edward Santo (February 25, 1940 – December 3, 2010) was an American Major League Baseball third baseman. He spent 14 years in the Major Leagues, from 1960-74, mainly as the regular third baseman for the Chicago Cubs. Santo was a productive player despite suffering from diabetes, a condition which he carefully concealed for 80 percent of his career; it eventually necessitated the amputation of both of his legs.
Ron Santo died Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, in an Arizona hospital, due to complications from bladder cancer and diabetes. Friends of Santo's family said the North Side icon lapsed into a coma on Wednesday before passing away early Friday morning.
