It was after last year's event that she had the infamous argument with then-boyfriend Chris Brown, which ended with her beaten black and blue - and him facing five years of probation and a year of counselling.
But at this year's event, Rihanna attended alone and stole the night in a show-stopping ruffled dress and quiffed hair-do.

The dramatic cocktail dress from the Viktor & Rolf Spring 2010 collection, had a large puff over her left shoulder in mint green and ruffles in pink, grey and black.
The one-shouldered mini looked stunning on the red carpet with pink satin heels, and mint green nail varnish.
But it looked a little impractical for the rest of the evening, and Rihanna looked swamped by the huge shoulder ruffle as she chatted to fellow celebrities and sat down to dinner with Katy Perry and Russell Brand.
They appeared to poke fun at the singer's dress as the napkins and tablecloth were also a mint green, and the British comedian held up him napkin to his shoulder for the cameras.
Rihanna, 21, was at the Pre-Grammy's Gala last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles which was hosted by The Recording Academy and music supremo Clive Davis.
The VIP celebration was attended by artists and industry bigwigs from music, film and television including stalwarts such as Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda and Joan Collins as well as the best of current music such as Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.
The event was a warm-up for tonight's 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, where Rihanna is up for best rap/sung collaboration for Run This Town with Jay-Z and Kanye West.
The singer stood out from the rest of the crowd attending the pre-Grammys party - with the predominant theme being silver.
Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Fergie and country singer Carrie Underwood were among the singers who arrived in glittering silver gowns as they went for high-wattage glamour.
Fergie, 34, real name Stacy Feguson, of the Black Eyed Peas, wore a clinging silver and lace bandage dress.
She later took to the stage with Guns N' Roses legend Slash to perform Sweet Child O' Mine, and there were also performances from Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Ke$ha and Mary J. Blige.
The Black Eyed Peas have six nominations at the Grammys and are set to perform a medley of their hits Imma Be and I Gotta Feeling at tonight's awards show which will feature a video collage of fan-generated YouTube clips along with celebrity cameos from the likes of 50 Cent, Adam Lambert and Alex Rodriguez.

Women dominate the nominations for this year's Grammys.
Country star Taylor Swift, who was famously embarrassed at the MTV Video Music Awards when Kanye West stormed her acceptance speech, is up for eight Grammys in total, including album of the year, record of the year and song of the year.
Her main competitors are Beyonce - who has 10 nominations - and Lady GaGa and all three will perform on stage.
Beyonce will do a medley of If I Were a Boy and Alanis Morissette's You Oughta Know, while Lady Gaga will be accompanied on stage by Elton John.

Rock n' Roll collaboration: Slash and Fergie belt out Sweet Child O' Mine

Taylor will be joined by Stevie Nicks for a medley of Today was a Fairytale and You Belong With Me and Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon.
Michael Jackson will be posthumously awarded a lifetime achievement gong, which is set to be accepted by his eldest children Paris, 11, and Prince Michael, 12.
Tonight's show will be held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.
