Miley Cyrus steps out on a shopping trip with her new Mate, a German Shepherd puppy

She's got a successful music and acting career, millions of adoring fans and a hunky boyfriend.

And now Miley Cyrus has every famous woman's ultimate accessory - a pet dog.

The Hannah Montana star, who already owns a Maltipoo called Sophie, was pictured carrying her new pride and joy, Mate, through West Hollywood this week.

Miley couldn't stop smiling as she took Mate, a nine-week old white German Shepherd, on a shopping trip to Maxfields shopping centre, on Melrose Avenue.

Wearing a denim shirt over a flimsy white t-shirt, a tiny skirt and Dr.Marten-style boots the 17-year-old took full advantage of her puppy's size as she carried him along to her car.

The German Shepherd is a gift from her parents, who wanted her to have a dog just like father Billy Ray's dog, Tex.

On her official blog Miley wrote: 'It's so great that Mate is a puppy so I can take him everywhere. But it won't be long until he's his full size!'

She then joked that it would be 'a bit more difficult to fit him in my Prius' when Mate is fully grown, as he could weigh up to 125lbs (nine stone).

She said she was inspired by boyfriend Liam Hemsworth to name the dog Mate.

Miley said: 'I named it ‘mate’ coz I always say ‘mate’ now to Liam. So that’s my little German Shepherd dog’s name and no-one really knows that yet because I get him back when I get home, so I’m stoked…I called him ‘mate’ pretty much all the time and I did his accent a lot.'

The singer recently denied she is engaged to the Australian actor after she was pictured wearing a ring on her engagement finger.

But, according to reports she, has been joking to pals about the possibility of changing her name to match her 18-year-old boyfriend's.

A source said: 'Miley's crazy in love with Liam, and keeps joking that Miley Hemsworth sounds so fancy and sophisticated.

'She says she can't wait to turn 18 this year so she could do whatever she wants - even marry Liam - and no one can stop her.'

Miley has reportedly told her record company that she now wants to take a career break to spend more time with Liam.

The source claimed she told her record company: 'I just want to enjoy my life for a while.'

However, her father is warning her not to take too much time off, as she may get forgotten by the public.

He is reported to have told her: 'You're only a big star for a brief amount of time, and when it's over, it's over.'
