Melkam Michael wins "Miss Ethiopia 2010"beauty contest

The 2009 Miss Addis Ababa beauty queen, Melkam Michael, last Saturday won the coveted Miss Ethiopia 2010 crown.

The 19-year-old, secondyear Addis Ababa University law student won the beauty competition held at the Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel after fears escalated that it might not materialize. The highly publicized show announced that it might take place at the Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel over the Sheger FM radio for the organizer had not booked the venue until the last minute.

Miss Ethiopia 2010 Melkam said she was excited to win the title and conveyed a message that Ethiopia was a home for beautiful people in all corners. The organizer and Ethiopian Village /Miss Ethiopia director, Mr. Murad Mohammed, commended her notion saying that the crown would provide her with immense opportunity to promote Ethiopia.

In an exclusive interview with The Reporter, Melkam Michael said that she was very happy with the competition. She had believed that she would triumph over the other contestants through her positive attitude towards people, her confidence, and the way she answered the questions, in addition to her physical beauty.

The 2010 Miss Ethiopia beauty pageant was organized by Ethiopian Village / Miss Ethiopia and held on July 24 at the Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel.
Twenty three contestants participated in the event. At the beginning of the competition the finalists appeared with traditional and evening dresses. They were judged on their catwalk skills, self-expression, and their general knowledge of their country.

The five judges who were selected for the competition were not previously introduced to the contestants. The organizers said the arrangement made the competition fair and successful. The five judges came from different backgrounds and experience. The renowned music arranger, Mulatu Asatatke, and the sensational actress, Meseret Meberate, were among the celebrity judges.

This year’s coveted crown of “Miss Ethiopia 2010” was awarded to the 1.70 m. tall Melkam Michael from Addis Ababa. The inspirational beauty queen’s elegant and charismatic charm had landed her in the 1st place. The highly confident Melkam weighs 41 kg. She received the crown from last year’s second runner-up, Meron Alemayehu.

In addition, Melkam was also awarded a certificate and cosmetics goodies worth 500 birr from Cosmo Trading Plc.

According to the organizer, Melkam will have an award of 25,000 birr cash prize, a brand new Lifan car, and will take part in the Miss World Cultural Heritage 2010 in South Africa. The first runner up Yetemework Nurbeja will get a 15,000 birr bursary, compete in the Miss Earth competition in Vietnam, and the second runner up, Sosina Girma, will get 10,000 birr and compete in the Miss Progress International 2010 in Italy. According to the organizer, the award ceremony of the prizes to the winners is scheduled for tomorrow.

However, Young Fan PLC manufacturer of Lifan car said it had retracted its promise to hand out a Lifan car to the winner. But Murad Mohammed, the organizer, said “as per our promise, we will give away all the prizes to the winners.”
