Feeling fragile: X Factor's Katie Waissel has been comforted by her parents after reportedly reaching 'breaking point'
Katie Waissel is on the brink of quitting X Factor after a series of panic attacks, insiders say.
The 24-year-old contestant, who narrowly avoided elimination from the ITV talent show on Sunday, has said she ‘can’t carry on’ and yesterday remained in bed for much of the day.
She also delayed a video shoot for the show’s charity single for six hours and last night insiders said they are seriously considering telling her to stand aside.
Miss Waissel, who has a chest infection, is said to be at breaking point after being in the bottom two contestants for the second time on Sunday.
Yesterday, her parents Diana and Maurice were allowed into the contestants’ house to comfort her. And she was given round-the-clock care by medical professionals after another sleepless night. The rest of the contestants were made to wait at the studios where they were due to shoot a video for the cover version of the David Bowie classic Heroes.
Miss Waissel, who broke down and wept after finding herself in the sing-off with girl group Belle Amie on Sunday, finally turned up at the London studios at 4.45pm. But she pulled out of joining fellow finalists at the Cosmopolitan Awards last night.
The strain was showing on Sunday's show when Katie wept after finding herself in the sing-off with Belle Amie
A show source said: ‘She’s very fragile and we are very concerned. We are considering asking her to step aside because it is really affecting the show. She would still be able to do the X Factor tour if she is strong enough. Her well-being is our priority.
She has been in tears and saying she can’t carry on. Producers gave Katie maximum opportunity to turn up, but had to shoot some scenes without her.
‘When she did arrive, she was given a very icy reception by her fellow contestants. Katie was really hurt by the reaction because she had been up all night, having panic attacks, and crying hysterically.’
Katie reportedly kept the other contestants waiting at a video shoot for their charity single Heroes
The contestant has had a series of upsets and breakdowns. She went to pieces in front of her mentor, Cheryl Cole, in her audition after she fluffed her words. And she has had a string of tantrums backstage at the live shows.
The X Factor group charity single, for Armed Forces charity Help For Heroes, is odds-on for number one. It is due for release on November 21.
